3 Ways to Whiten Teeth Naturally + How to Heal the Oral Microbiome

Teeth whitening naturally

I won’t lie, the fact that there is a living, breathing ecosystem of fungus and bacteria responsible for keeping my mouth a healthy, happy place, kinda freaks me out.

But, it also fascinates me on such a weird, i-love-to-pop-pimples level.

When I was in the throws of my autoimmune disease, my mouth was a scary place. Because, like I always mention on Insta, your mouth health directly reflects the health of your WHOLE entire body. Oh yeah, did I mention gut health includes the health of your mouth?

And we both know that when you have an autoimmune disease, your gut health is NOT okay.

If your mouth is a stinky, inflamed, diseased place, chances are, your body is too.

Here’s why mouth health is SO important: digestion begins in the mouth. Yep. Not your esophagus, not your stomach, your MOUTH. There is bacteria in your saliva that starts digesting your food before you even swallow.

Talk about efficiency.

So, how can you make leaps and strides toward healing the health of your mouth AND whitening teeth all at once?

Enter: the magic duo.

How to Oil Pull With Coconut Oil:

On an empty stomach (I like to do it right when I wake up), take a spoonful of coconut oil and put it in your mouth until it melts. Once melted, start swishing it through your teeth and around your mouth. Swish for 5-10 minutes and spit the oil out in the trash can. That used coconut oil will be some NASTAY stuff. Mouth bacteria is no joke.

  • Whitens Teeth

  • Strengthens Enamel

  • Reduces Gum Inflammation

  • Kills Bad Bacteria (but not the good stuff!)

  • Some even claim it's healed their cavities

How to Tongue Scrape:

Get a tongue scraper (like this one). Scrape your tongue as many times necessary until no more film is scraping off.

  • Reduces cravings by clearing old food particles off the tongue

  • Clears off yellow-causing bacteria and fungus living on the tongue

  • Stimulates reflexology points on tongue

Food-Grade Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is the active ingredient found in all the whitening products on the market, so why not skip all the fluff and go straight to the source?

How to whiten teeth with it: pour hydrogen peroxide on toothbrush and brush teeth thoroughly. I usually leave it on for about 1-2 minutes and then rinse it out.

Is there such a thing as too much whitening? The answer is yes. Learn more about safety precautions here.

Activated Charcoal Powder

Now, you might think, how the heck is using the blackest substance to ever exist on the planet earth going to whiten my teeth? Trust me.

Dip your toothbrush in some activated charcoal powder and brush teeth for about a minute. The abrasiveness of the charcoal removes stains and brightens enamel.

That’s it! My tooth-whitening secrets are out. Oil pulling with coconut oil and tongue scraping keeps my teeth bright and white, while hydrogen peroxide and activated charcoal are there to pick up the slack when I need a little whitening boost.
